Writing Wednesday | Prompt 50

What a great week it has been! I am very excited that the release of WINGLESS went so well. Have you gotten your copy yet? I have a goodreads giveaway going on right now so be sure to go visit and enter. Quickly, let's do a prompt!

Prompt Fifty- Picnic Gone Wrong
Write a short story, or excerpt of a family picnic gone wrong. Any length, any amount of time. Just write!

My response...

"Will you marry me?" My brother got down on one knee and proposed to his long time girlfriend. I snuck a glance at my parents and saw the glee on their face. Their first born was going to get married. I was elated for them. Claire was basically in the family anyway.
But then I saw her face, and I knew what was about to happen would be awful. I stepped forward, the innate urge to protect my brother taking over me. I placed my hand on his shoulder and in that moment, I saw the understanding on his face.
"Do you think we can talk about this?" Claire whispered to my brother.
"What's there to talk about?" he asked back to her.
"I don't want to do this here," she hastily said. But my brother shook his head. I could feel his rapid heart through my hand and I knew that he was on the brink of a breakdown. "Fine," she relented and stepped backwards, putting space between us and her.
"Whatever you have to say, you can say in front of my entire family."
"Fine," she snipped out. "I want to marry you," she said and a sigh escaped my lips. Thank god. "But I have to tell you something important first, so we're clear. I cheated on you. Twice. But it was a mistake and I was scared to tell you, so I didn't. But it's right you know--"
I wind up my arm and slap her square across the face. My parents gasp from behind me and my brother grabs me around the waist and pulls me against him.
"Get out," my brother says to her.
"But Adam..."
"Leave," he sternly states and even I wouldn't go against his severe tone. She starts to say something, but thinks better of it. We all watch in silence as her silhouette retreats to her little green Honda. We watch her drive away.
"Oh Adam," my mother says and rushes towards him. He lets her hug him, but I see his expression. After she lets him go, he runs away, headed towards the lake past the park we're in. I follow him, knowing he needs his twin.
